My personal experience of skiing Almenwelt Lofer, Austria
The big ski resorts in Austria were always the biggest draw for me when looking to spend a week skiing. I enjoyed skiing as many kilometres of piste skiing as possible, so ski resorts with at least 150 km plus were my popular choice up until recently.
On paper Almenwelt Lofer is tiny with only 46 km of piste. Depending on which ski pass you buy, there is also Waidring a short ski bus ride away with an additional 42 km of skiing.
First impressions of skiing in Lofer
First impressions count as they say. As I took the cable car up the mountain, the unusual geography of the mountains struck me.
The cable car ride is in 2 sections, nothing unusual there, however the second section takes you into a snow bowl hidden behind the main facade of the mountain range. This gives a real sense of adventure, into an almost untouched ski area by modern standards, like stepping back in time 30 years, but in a good way.
An Austrian ski resort for beginners
All the skiing here except the black run is very easy. Beginners will be skiing most of Lofer after a few days. The ski runs are gentle in gradient, but do have a sense of skiing through the beautiful alpine landscape.
If I was to suggest a ski resort for beginners in Austria, then Almenwelt Lofer would be my immediate recommendation.
One of the best family ski resorts in Austria
Families looking for a family friendly ski resort in Austria take a look at Lofer and Waidring ski area. The 2 areas will provide a family with plenty of skiing variety, along with the charm of the traditional medieval town of Lofer.

Lofer's historical past
The town itself is steeped in history. Most the buildings originate back to medieval times. You will notice many of them have an information plaque on the front of the building telling you the history of that particular building.

Although Lofer is more catered for the family, it does have a fun aspect as well. The bar at he bottom of the cable car, has a live band playing most days after 3pm. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, without too much craziness.
Final thoughts on the ski town of Almenwelt Lofer
Skiers looking to ski hundreds of kilometres during their holiday may be put off by the low numbers of piste.
Between the 2 resorts of Lofer and Waidring I found enough skiing to keep me occupied. The ski run that crosses the border into Germany at Waidring is a great added bonus. It takes 20 minutes to ski from the top to the lift back into Austria.
Finally, overall, if your a beginner and its your first week skiing, Lofer is one of the best choices in Austria for skiing.
